HIGHLIGHTS FROM VENICE

Dorotheum's Autumn Classic Auction Week from 4th - 11th November 2021 / Preview of the Contemporary Week from 29th November - 3rd December 2021

Dorotheum's Autumn Classic Auction Week, from 4th - 11th November 2021, includes sales of Old Master Paintings19th Century Paintings and Furniture and Works of Art.

One of the dominant themes of the week will be the art of Venice, with work by several of the great masters represented. Highlights of the Old Masters sale include paintings by Tintoretto whose work is ubiquitous to Venice, adorning the walls of many of the churches and scuole. Born Jacopo Robusti (1518? -1594), the son of a silk dyer from whose profession his moniker derives, Tintoretto is considered to be one of the most important of Venetian painters. The auction on the 10th November 2021 includes his depiction of the most celebrated romantic pair in ancient mythology, accompanied by their winged companion, Cupid. Venus and Mars and Cupid (estimate: € 300,000 - 500,000).

Also included in the Old Master Paintings sale is a view of Venice by the great 18th century Venetian artist, Francesco Guardi (1712 - 1793). The artist is celebrated for his Venetian vedute or views, which are executed in an impulsive, almost impressionistic style with a particular feeling for light and colour. His atmospheric view, San Giorgio Maggiore with the Punta della Dogana, is included in the sale (estimate: € 400,000 - 600,000).

The 19th Century Paintings sale on 9th November 2021 also includes an outstanding painting of Venice. The imposing Departure of Doge Francesco Morosini for the battle against the Turks in the Peloponnese in 1693 by Luigi Querena (1824 - 1890) which impressively depicts the festive mood for the departure of the fleet. Francesco Morosino was the 108th Doge of Venice, ruling at the height of the Great Turkish War. The Doge was famously attached to his cat, even taking it with him into battle. After the cat’s death, Morosini had it embalmed and brought to the Museo Correr, where it can still be seen today. The large format of the painting, measuring 132 x 190 cm, allows a detailed view of the Bacino di San Marco, crowded with boats and gondolas and framed by accurately depicted surrounding buildings, including the Riva degli Schiavoni, the Doge's Palace, the Biblioteca Marciana and Santa Maria della Salute (estimate: € 200,000 - 300,000).

Dorotheum’s Contemporary Weekfrom 29th November to 3rd December 2021, brings together a large selection of works of modern and contemporary art by Max Slevogt, Serge Poliakoff, Alfons Walde, Werner Berg, Emilio Vedova, Raoul de Keyser, Günther Förg, Otto Muehl and Arnulf Rainer, amongst others.
