EN ROUTE TO SUMMER

The Classic Cars auction at Dorotheum on 3rd July revs up for summer with a range of sports cars steeped in history including a Toto-Wolff Mercedes and the Austrian classic, an original Steyr.

Dorotheum’s Classic Cars sale on 3rd July will include a selection of 74 rare cars and motorcycles which span the years from the earliest days of automotive history right up to the present day.

It is hard to imagine a more prestigious provenance than that of the Mercedes-AMG GTincluded in the sale. The car was previously owned by Toto Wolff, the renowned manager who made Mercedes Formula 1 the most successful racing team of its time. The 2018 super-car is Mercedes’ challenge to the Porsche 911 sporting a top speed of 319 km/h, and this particular vehicle is as good as brand new with a mere 2500km on the clock (estimate €190,000 - 250,000).

Another star attraction in the auction, the white Dino 246 GT, has had only one single owner since it was built in 1971. Still in its original condition and with a mileage of approx 50,000km and matching numbers, this work of art on four wheels, which was named after Enzo Ferrari’s son, cuts a fine figure. From the very beginning, reviewers raved about the beauty of the Dino writing: ‘The shape alone is so beautiful, it is probably the greatest thing that Pininfarina ever did’ (€350,000 - 450,000). The blood-orange Porsche 911 E 2.2, which is also included in the sale, has a very similar background having, likewise, had only one single owner for 50 years (€90,000 – 130,000).

A rare piece from Austria
We are transported back to the earliest days of Austria’s automotive history by an exceptional and extremely rare lot in the sale: a car from the first series of the Steyr brand, which was produced in 1920 to a design by Hans Ledwinka. This Steyr Type II 12/40 hp is one of a handful still in existence and perhaps the oldest surviving Steyr in the world. It also has a unique story to tell having been first owned by the Egyptian royal family and then returning to Austria in the late 1970s. This gem is expected to reach €240,000 to 320,000.

A rally icon of the 1970s and the most uncompromising and exciting car of its time, the Lancia Stratos offers inspiring authenticity and a stunning history. One of these red ‘wedges on wheels’, which, incidentally, was never worn out on the racetrack, is heading to the starting line with an estimate of €300,0000 to 400,000.

A sensation in silver blue
The 1963 Chevrolet Corvette did not come by its soubriquet “Stingray” by chance - the vehicle displays radical, aggressive styling, and, breathtakingly, was modelled after the animal itself. Its centre fin extends across the roof’s centre bar splitting the rear window in two. This split-window coupé is one of the most sought-after models today (€110,000 - 140,000). This vehicle, in cool ‘silver blue’, can also boast an illustrious provenance, as its first owner was the young Gernot Langes-Swarovski, who transformed the company into a global brand.

The auction will offer a particularly large concentration of high-class Mercedes cars for sale, but there is also a good choice of BMWs and Jaguars as well. For instance, just in time for the anniversary of ‘60 years of the E-Type’, there is the 1961 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Litre Open Two-Seater included in the sale. This vehicle was created in the first year of production and was brought directly to Vienna (€180,000 – 240,000). The legendary Puch 500 is, of course, part of the line-up of the sale, as is the Beetle Cabrioin Viper Green metallic.
