Glaciers, alpine pastures and snow: the unmistakable landscape paintings of Alfons Walde (Oberndorf 1891-1958 Kitzbühel) have enjoyed enormous popularity for many years. Dorotheum’s evening auction of modern art on 29 November 2022 turned into a veritable celebration of his work, with results far beyond expectations.
All five paintings by this Tyrolean artist found a new owner, including the cover lot of the auction catalogue, “Almen und Gletscher” (1932) for €565,500, and Walde’s characteristic motif of a lonely mountain farm (€528,000, 1935).
Great interest and significant appreciation characterised the auction. There was also great demand for works by Austrian artists, such as Egon Schiele and Rudolf Wacker, and by international greats, including Tamara de Lempicka, Václav Špála and Giorgio de Chirico.
