Carl Theodor von Piloty and Franz Adam | Empress Elisabeth of Austria as a Bride on Horseback

One of the highlights at the 19th century paintings auction on 27 April 2017 was the sale of a work by Carl Theodor von Piloty and Franz Adam. An unparalleled depiction of the Empress’ authentic nature, the piece shows the recently engaged Elisabeth as a bride on horseback in front of Possenhofen Castle in 1853.
The historically significant painting, a Christmas gift by Sisi, later Empress Elizabeth of Austria, to Emperor Franz Joseph I. in 1853, the year of their engagement, was sold by Dorotheum for a price of €1,540,000 at the “19th Century Painting” auction on 27 April 2017, outstripping expectations many times over.
