Modern Art | November 23, 2016 | Retrospect

Modern art made its strongest-ever showing at Dorotheum on 23 November 2016. The true show-stopper was Marc Chagall's ‘Fleurs’, which garnered a phenomenal €1,022,500. The 1924 painting of a flower, which was previously part of a private collection, marks the beginning of the artist’s love affair with this motif, which he saw as a symbol of joy and hope. Amongst the other works of art that featured in the auction: Alfons Walde’s ‘Einsamer Berghof’, Giacomo Balla’s ‘Valori Plastici’, Otto Mueller’s ‘Landschaft mit drei Bäumen’ and Josef Engehart’s ‘Merlinsage’ (three working sketches for a nine-part frieze).
