Carl Auböck was one of the most prominent and innovative Austrian architects and design pioneers of the post-war period. He specialised in the industrial production of construction and design elements. Various cutlery designs for Neuzeughammer Ambosswerk that are now highly regarded (cutlery sets 2060 and 2080) were created at his initiative, the prototypes of which were developed in his workshops with his father.
Auböck III was born in Vienna on 6 January 1924, the eldest son of painter and designer Carl Auböck II and sculptress Mara Uckunowa-Auböck. After training as a metalworker and chaser he decided to study architecture at the Vienna University of Technology. Meanwhile, he also attended the vocational school for clockmakers, jewellers, gold and silversmiths, metalworkers and engravers in Vienna.
In 1952, he completed a postgraduate course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, USA. Here he met a series of contemporary and future design legends, with whom he maintained regular professional contacts over the decades: Herbert Bayer, Buckminster Fuller, George Nelson, Charles Eames, Benjamin Thompson, Konrad Wachsmann, Victor Papanek and many others.
In 1954, Auböck passed his Civil Engineer examination. The following year, he opened his own architecture and design studio in Vienna. After the death of his father, Carl, he followed in his footsteps and oversaw the design work at the Auböck workshop.
In 1977, he was appointed head of the master metalworker class at the Vienna University of Applied Arts, where he taught until his death. In the course of his long career, Auböck received several awards (including a gold medal for his steel dinner service 2060, at the 1958 Brussels World Fair), and was a member of numerous prestigious institutions around the world.
