Lotto No. 151 -

Johann Georg Platzer

Johann Georg Platzer - Collezione Reinhold Hofstätter

(Eppan 1704–1761)
Elegant Society – Allegory of the Senses,
dated lower left: 1750,
oil on copper, 24 x 28.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Sale im Kinsky, Vienna, 28 September 2010, lot 56 (as Circle of Johann Georg Platzer)

Literature:
M. Krapf, Johann Georg Platzer, Der Farbenzauber des Barock, Vienna 2014, pp. 37–40, cat. no. 225. Krapf thus writes about the present painting:
“This painting, which has recently surfaced on the art market, is the last known work by Johann Georg Platzer. ‘Vornehme Gesellschaft’ (Elegant Society), dated 1750, came into existence approximately ten years after Platzer’s principal works in Vienna, and is therefore the last surviving work by his hand. The painting is one of the works that he executed in a dabbing fashion, and is somewhat sparse in its rendering, and seemingly nonchalant in its figurative composition: in the isolation of the individual figures, it is almost like a still life... The pictorial scene may be broken up into three groups of two, five, and two, whose individual actions are merely connected through expressive gestures – a novel system of reference in the artist’s late period.”
