Provenance:
Walter Salzmann Collection, Vienna; Sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 16 January 1973, lots 165–168 (as “Attributed to Johannes Zick”) Gerhard Kölsch, Mainz, whom we thank for his kind assistance, sees a connection between these paintings and the oeuvre of Emanuel Wohlhaupter (Brno 1683–1756 Fulda), a court painter to the Prince-Abbot of Fulda. He refers to Wohlhaupter’s “Verspottung des Sokrates”, executed in 1737, currently preserved at the Deutsche Barockgalerie in Augsburg.
