The present painting is probably an early work by Aelbert Cuyps, which he executed under the influence of his father, Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp was a talented portrait and animal painter, and was able to combine these two genres in elegant stylistic solutions. The aristocracy and the affluent middle-classes in the northern regions of the Netherlands regarded bucolic depictions of this kind as the perfect representation of the idyllic country life of their dreams. In later years, Aelbert Cuyp devoted himself exclusively to landscape painting.
