The present painting is the oil sketch for the ceiling fresco of an unknown church in Hungary, which probably received its décor in around 1743. A further oil sketch on this subject can be found in the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento (see B. Passamani, Paul Troger, Neue Forschungsergebnisse, Mezzocorona 1997, p. 157, ill. 2). The Lviv National Art Gallery, Ukraine, preserves a pen and ink drawing of Troger’s with a sketch of this subject. All three works are closely related in terms of the composition and the postures of the figures.
