Salzburg Master, c. 1480

Salzburg Master, c. 1480 - Collezione Reinhold Hofstätter

Madonna and Child with Saint Anne, mixed media on punched gold ground on pinewood, 60 x 45 cm, framed

On the right-hand side of this work, St. Anne stands next to Mary as a child, and holds the Infant Jesus in her arms. The left-hand half of the image depicts St. Mary Magdalene with a jar of ointment and an unidentified saint, possibly the apostle Simon. As is common, the benefactor is depicted in a smaller format, and is shown kneeling at Mary Magdalene’s feet, holding a rosary. God the Father floats above, blessing the group, alongside the dove representing the Holy Spirit. The imagery of St. Anne came into being in the fourteenth century as a result of the “cult of Anne” that was prevalent at the time, and flourished in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The present painting is by an unknown master from the Salzburg region. It is a high-quality piece in excellent condition.
