Lotto No. 14 -

Middle-Rhenish Master, c. 1490

Middle-Rhenish Master, c. 1490 - Collezione Reinhold Hofstätter

The Martyrdom of Saint Agnes,
oil on panel, 60 x 38 cm, framed

Provenance:
Sale Lempertz, Cologne, 17 May 2003, lot 1085; Walter Steinmetz Collection, Darmstadt; Sale Lempertz, Cologne, 15 May 2010, lot 1525

Stephan Kemperdick, Frankfurt am Main, wrote to the former owner of this work in 2003: “Middle to Upper Rhine, with echoes of the master who crafted the Wolfskehlen altar (the work which gives the Museum of Darmstadt its name, with a second in Speyer) — compare the frontal positioning of Agnes, her oval-shaped face and the hands positioned as viewed from the side, with the Virgin depicted in Darmstadt’s Coronation of the Virgin.... The panel may, therefore, originate from the region surrounding Worms or Speyer. The date needs to be brought forward a little because the wide overshoes worn by the executioner only appeared from around 1490 onwards... The panel certainly formed part of a series — whether depicting the life of St. Agnes or a series of other holy martyrs — and could well have been part of the wing of an altarpiece. The curved golden branches completing the upper section are also highly typical of this in the Middle Rhine region.”
