The above veduta is based on the oil painting by Fjodor J. Alexejew, (1753-1824) dated 1823. Catherine II had expressed her wish for a set of baths in the ancient Roman style and chose Charles Cameron as the architect. He constructed the 'cold bath' complete with the agate rooms. In 1784, Catherine II. commissioned Cameron to build a hall of fame for the generals, poets and thinkers of antiquity, who she held in particular high esteem. The peristyle on the galleries top floor was lined with 44 Ionian columns, with a curving double stair case leading down into the gardens, it is flanked by the statues of Hercules and Flora mounted atop tall pedestals. The bronze statues were created in 1786 by Fjodor Gordejew, the are copies of antique statues at the Villa Farnese in Rome.
