Carl Wollek attended the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts and later the Munich Academy. After study tours to Italy, Belgium and France, he executed many portrait busts, funerary monuments and fountain sculpture in Vienna and Brünn. The sitter here, Theodor Billroth, was one of the most important surgeons of the 19th century.
