(Stockholm 1857–1908)
Scene at dusk in the harbour of Stockholm, signed, dated H. af Sillen (18)95, oil on canvas, 49 x 85 cm, framed, (Rei)
Provenance:
Collection of Marine Director Carl Richson (1857-1925), Stockholm;
Private Collection, Austria.
Hermann Gustaf af Sillen was a Swedish marine painter who studied in Paris and Berlin, amongst other places. His teachers included Hans Gude, the Norwegian artist and academy professor of landscape painting. As with his teacher, marine pieces with a disturbed sea often made their way into Sillen’s artistic repertoire. His connection to the sea and the people who lived in its proximity accompanied him throughout his life in his artistic works. The connection to the sea also found expression in his second professional career as a naval officer.
Sillen’s works captivate their viewers through the realistic rendering of the surfaces of water. In the present painting, his finely modulated style and colour scheme open up to the observer the evening mood over the harbour of Stockholm. The view roams over the open sea, and a yearning for foreign lands is palpable.
