Frederik de Moucheron
(Amsterdam 1633–1686)

Frederik de Moucheron was apprenticed to the landscape painter Jan Asselijn and then travelled to France, staying in Lyon and Paris in 1656. According to Houbraken, he met Theodor Helmbreker in Paris, who is said to have added the figures for several of Frederik’s compositions. Moucheron, who probably never visited Italy, painted southern landscapes in an Italianate style and in the 1660s also took to producing park scenes populated with elegantly dressed figures. In many cases, the figural staffage in his paintings is by the hand of Johannes Lingelbach.
