We are grateful to Riccardo Lattuada and Caterina Volpi for independently confirming the attribution after examination of the present painting in the original.
The present painting is a new addition to the catalogue of Jacob de Heusch. A very similar composition by the master is conserved in the Pallavicini Collection, Rome (see A. Busiri Vici, Jacob de Heusch (1656-1701) un Pittore Olandese a Roma detto il “copia”, ed. by C. Martini, . 70, fig. 46; cat. 23, p. 122, oil on canvas, 94 x 134.5 cm). This work has almost the same measurements as the present painting, a composition which also depicts trees on the side and the river in the centre, and an identical group of figures situated to the left of the composition. In both paintings de Heusch’s manner is stylistically close to Salvator Rosa’s from 1675-80.
