(Otterberg 1631–1685 Frankfurt am Main)
An Italian landscape with antique ruins and a shepherd family with their flock,
signed and dated lower right: JHRoos fecit 1666,
oil on canvas, 46.5 x 60.5 cm, framed
In 1824, Goethe wrote about the “Raphael of all livestock painters”: “Roos is indefatigable in his diligent rendering of the hair and wool of his goats and sheep, and infinitesimal detail reveals that he felt the purest bliss during his work and did not think about completion […].” The pastoral idyll, the peaceful coexistence of men and beast, became his favourite subject, combining genre and landscape painting. Having never been to Italy, he used Roman architectural motifs for his settings, for which he usually drew upon copper engravings as a source of inspiration.
