Marijke de Kinkelder of the RKD, The Hague, identified Jan van den Hecke as the artist of the present painting (written communication, February 2010). Stylistically and with regards to the colours, it is related to works by Karel Dujardin and Jan Asselijn. Jan van den Hecke, a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp, lived in Rome for an extensive period of time painting landscapes and still lifes for patrons including the Duke of Bracciano. He returned to Antwerp in 1659. Archduke Leopold William entrusted him with a comprehensive series of flower still lifes.
