The present painting combines styles and influences taken from seventeenth-century Florence; the soft brush strokes are reminiscent of Francesco Furini and Felice Ficherelli, the details in the faces are similar to those seen in the portraits by Antonio Franchi, Anton Domenico Gabbiani and Justus Sustermans.
In the focused expression and stance of David holding the head of his enemy, it is possible to see the strong influence of artists such as Pier Dandini (see F. Baldassari, La Pittura del Seicento a Firenze. Indice degli Artisti e delle loro Opere, Milan 2009, p. 296, ill. 217 and p. 303, ill.124) and Ottavio Vannini (see Baldassari, ibid., p. 696, ill. 424 and p. 698, ill. 426).
