The present painting is a workshop replica of the “boy with lowered head” in Van Dyck’s painting Suffer Little Children to Come unto Me in the National Gallery of Canada (see S. Barnes, N. de Poorter, O. Millar, H. Vey, Van Dyck, A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, New Haven-London 2004, p. 30, no. I, 14). An autograph replica by Van Dyck of the same boy (no. I, 15) is in a New York private collection, and a further, but weaker study (without the hands) is preserved in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
