(Antwerp 1601–1678 and Antwerp 1575–1632)
A floral garland surrounding a cartouche with the Madonna and Child,
oil on panel, 21 x 18 cm, framed
Provenance:
Collection Don José Maria de Alava;
with Rafael Valls, London (1999);
Private collection, Belgium
The present painting comes with a certificate issued by Klaus Ertz. Ertz dates the work to the period around 1626. He writes: “The painting has survived in excellent condition. In terms of their values, the typical colours used by Jan Brueghel the Younger speak in favour of the painter’s early period, soon after he had taken over the studio of his father, when he was still working in the latter’s characteristic manner. He has traced every single blossom; the beetles and insects crawling on the flowers are rendered with a particularly loving meticulousness. Like his father, he preferred to use Van Balen whenever Christian motifs were requested to accompany his floral garlands.”
