(Bologna 1610–1670)
Fortuna with a purse,
oil on canvas, 163.8 x 107 cm, framed
Provenance:
Malvezzi collection, Bologna, until 1982;
Private European collection
The present painting derives from a prototype of Fortuna with a purse by Guido Reni from around 1637 and it can also be compared to a work with the same subject by Reni’s collaborator Giovanni Andrea Sirani, in the Fondazione Sorgente Group in Rome. This painting presents various similarities with the present canvas, especially with regards to Fortuna’s face, as well as the hair and hands of the female figure. After an apprenticeship with Giacomo Cavedone in Bologna, Giovanni Andrea Sirani worked in the workshop of Guido Reni and became one of his main assistants until his master’s death in 1642. Later, Sirani opened his own studio, which was one of the most prolific and successful in mid-seventeenth century Bologna.
