We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for endorsing the present painting as an autograph work by Stalbemt, which he is going to include in his catalogue raisonné, forthcoming in 2017, under no. 54.
Unlike most of his Flemish colleagues, Stalbemt painted the staffage figures for his landscapes himself. Known signed and dated works by this artist from the years 1604–1629 will serve as a basis for further research into his oeuvre. Klaus Ertz dates the present painting, which easily fits in with Stalbemt’s early work, into the period around 1605.
