Shepherds driving their flock to the village for shearing - Allegory of Summer,

The present painting can be dated to the period around 1625–1630. Vrancx was so successful with such allegories at the time that it was difficult for him to meet the high demand. The question of whether he had a workshop or not has been much discussed. In this context, a letter by Jan Brueghel II to his business partner in Seville from 1634 has been quoted repeatedly: “Vrancx has much work to do, but refuses to employ collaborators, with the result that it takes him a long time to complete his commissions. He does not allow the circulation of copies of his pictures” (see H. Gerson and E. H. ter Kuile, Art and Architecture in Belgium, 1600–1800, Harmondsworth 1960, p. 63, note 33).
