Andrea Piccinelli, called Andrea Brescianino - Dipinti antichi

(Siena? circa 1487 – after 1525)
The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist,
oil on panel, 104.5 x 83 cm, framed

The present painting is registered in the Fototeca Zeri (no. 36769) as Andrea Piccinelli, called il Brescianino.

We are grateful to Mauro Lucco, Vilmos Tátrai and Bernard Aikema for all independently suggesting the attribution after examination of the present painting in the original.

This elegant painting is typical of the work of Andrea Piccinelli, also known as Brescianino because of his father’s city of origin, Brescia. The artist’s date of birth is uncertain, but his name appears for the first time in Siena in 1505 along with that of his father and his brother Raffaello, who was also a painter. Andrea soon moved to Florence, where he was influenced by the great masters of the early sixteenth century such as Raphael, Leonardo and Fra Bartolomeo, as well as the early mannerists, such as Andrea del Sarto. This influence is particularly evident in the choice of colour in the present painting, as well as the soft brushstrokes and the elegant drawing. Andrea del Brescianino executed altarpieces often in collaboration with his brother. The Holy Family and the Madonna and Child were among the subjects favoured by the artist, who depicted them many times, in paintings mainly destined for private devotion.
