Fred Meijer has confirmed the authenticity of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. He dates the work to the second half of the 1650s or the first half of the 1660s.

Ottmar Elliger was born in Sweden and according to Houbraken, he travelled all the way from Copenhagen to Antwerp in order to train with Daniel Seghers. Elliger’s earliest painting dates from 1653. In 1654 he is recorded to be in Copenhagen, in 1660 he gets married in Amsterdam, in 1662 he is in Dordrecht and in 1665 in Hamburg. He finally settles in Berlin in 1670 where he becomes court painter to Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg.
