(Antwerp 1564–1635) and (Antwerp 1601–1678)
An extensive river landscape with the Judgement at Bethel (2 Kings 2: 23–25),
oil on panel, 46.5 x 63.2 cm, framed
Provenance:
with Galerie Giroux, Brussels;
Collection GE Artesia, The Netherlands
We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for endorsing the authenticity of the present painting. A certificate is available.
The present painting is a joint work by Jan Brueghel the Younger and Joos de Momper the Younger. Momper painted the river landscape, onto which Brueghel then added the figures of the prophet Elisha, the mocking children, and the bear.
In his certificate, Klaus Ertz writes: “The extremely painterly approach employed by Josse de Momper suggests that the work was executed in his late period, around 1630. The same applies for the figures by the hand of Jan Brueghel the Younger. After the death of Jan Brueghel the Elder (1625), Momper, who had been a close friend and colleague, expressed his bond of friendship by participating in many projects with the son, Jan Brueghel the Younger. The paintings by these two masters are entirely homogenous and coherent and appear to be by one hand.”
