A single-headed hand drum in an hourglass shape, known as a ‘kundu’, originating from the Asmat on the southern coast of New Guinea. Carved from hard wood and dyed black.
The wooden body of the drum displays four raised reliefs, three in the form of opposing hands, one with simple dots, as well as continuous deep lined finishing at the top and bottom in volutes.
The drumhead is made of monitor lizard skin (with a crack on the edge). A ‘classical’ object with good, partially shiny patina through protracted use.
Height: 62 cm;
Diameter: c. 15 cm (above). First third of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian private collection. Nach Angabe des Einbringers während einer Neuguinea-Reise im Jahr 1973 selbst vor Ort erworben!
