A typical Indonesian dagger, known as a ‘kris’. With an old, unusually long, straight, narrow, double-edged blade made using pamor technique (pamor = forged from many layers of iron).
The hilt made of ivory, in part skilfully carved in openwork, depicts ‘Jawa Demam’, a popular mythical hybrid being, half human, half bird. The hilt ring (‘mendak’) is made of old brass, and sits underneath the hilt. It is likely to have been inlaid secondarily (it does not fit perfectly). Otherwise, this is an old piece with an interesting, well-carved hilt.
Length: 43.3 cm. First third of the 20th century or earlier. (ME) ASA
