‘Hampatong’ is the name given to such ancestor and guardian figures made of hardwood. The Dayak groups set them up in Borneo, both as memorial sculptures to the deceased at burial sites, and as guardians in front of their longhouses.
The present ‘hampatong' is made of old, hard wood. The arms are kept close to the body and it has white, polished discs made from turbo sea snail shells inserted as eyes. Stylistically, the figure comes from the Ot Danum Dayak of southern Borneo. With good, old patina, erosion caused by exposure to the elements, signs of weathering and cracks from long periods outdoors.
