A granary door of the Toba Batak, from Lake Toba in central Sumatra. Made of old wood, with a large lizard carved in relief. The lizard symbolises the earth deity, which is responsible for the fertility of the fields. In other words: an obvious symbol for a (full) rice granary. A very old piece with usage patina and understandable age-related damage (cracks, some pieces broken off, bolt missing). 19th century or earlier.
Height: 97 cm. (ME)
