Thailand: the bird of the gods ‘Garuda’, with the sea monster ‘Makara’ in its claws. Made of wood, originally painted blackish brown and white, with some remains of gilding.
The bird of the gods ‘Garuda’ (an eagle) is the mythical steed of the Hindu god Vishnu. In this representation, Garuda holds the two snake-like bodies of the mythical sea monster Makara in its claws at the bottom, and holds its tail in its hands at the top. Makara’s head faces forward at the bottom.
This dramatic mythological scene is here carved of wood, was originally dyed blackish brown and white, and displays remains of previous gilding in the linear cavities. An expressive, vivid carving, with colour scuffing due to age. Otherwise no damage.
Height: c. 25 cm; width: c. 18 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
