two small gilded guardian lions (‘chinthe’), an old Burmese calendar made of wood listing the days of the week and a lidded box for sacred writings, made of bamboo cane. 1: Two small guardian lions, called ‘chinthe’. Used as ancillary figures alongside Buddha statues. Carved out of wood, underpainted with black lacquer and gilded.
Height: 9 cm and 9.5 cm; length: each 7 cm.

2: An old Burmese calendar depicting the days of the week. Carved from wood and dyed black and red. With the corresponding symbols in relief, from top to bottom: the calendar starts at the top with the representation of a Buddhist stupa, with a small Buddha figure inside. Continuing downwards, this is followed by Sunday = the bird of the gods Garuda, then Monday = a tiger, Tuesday = a lion, Wednesday morning = an elephant with tusks, Thursday = a mongoose, Friday = a rat, Saturday = a snake, and finally, at the very bottom, Wednesday afternoon = an elephant without tusks. A highly original, rare object.
Dimensions: 33.5 cm x 6.2 cm x 1.8 cm.

3: A Burmese container made of bamboo cane, with a lid. Used by monks to store sacred writings. Underpainted with black lacquer, topped with red lacquer. The entire lidded container bears attractive three-dimensional embellishments, with three ‘heavenly dancers’ on the sides, and a continuous row of three striding elephants at the bottom.
