In Burma, secondary figurines such as this are called ‘devi’, and positioned in front of Buddhist altars, pagodas, stupas or shrines. They originally depicted the lower-level Hindu gods. In Burma they became part of the symbolic repertoire of Burmese ‘Theravada Buddhism’.
The present devi sculpture is carved from heavy, hard light-coloured wood (probably teak), and is unusually old. It is wearing lavish courtly robes and a tall winged crown, has its hands folded in front of its chest, and is standing on a round lotus base (broken off at the right foot). With remains of original underpainting with red and black lacquer, as well as minimal residues of earlier gold leaf to the face, neck and body. However, this is greatly worn off due to age. A few small pieces broken off from exposed areas and edges. Despite this, an overall impressive, very old object.
Height: 99 cm. 18th/19th century or earlier. (ME)
