Lotto No. 292

Tibet: a long knife with sheath and pendant. Alles höchst aufwändig mit Silber und Messing verziert.

Tibet: a long knife with sheath and pendant. Alles höchst aufwändig mit Silber und Messing verziert. - Tribal Art

A knife with a long single-edged blade, fullered on both sides. The long wooden hilt, which is equally eye-catching, is enveloped in high-quality silver, and features embossed floral decoration in two medallions.
At the sides, and at the end of the handle, there is ornamentation in the form of silver openwork. With fortune symbols and bats.
The special feature of this piece is the sheath: it is completely covered with openwork relief made of silver and brass. With a central good luck symbol made of silver, surrounded by bats made of brass. Completed to the top and bottom by silver openwork reliefs of animals (buffalo, snakes, dragons, monkeys, birds, and many more). On both sides, there are various animals in a riot of dense openwork tendrils with flowers and leaves.
At the top of the sheath there is a silver dragon’s head from which a silver chain and pendant hang. This pendant is also cast in silver, and decorated with a bat, dragon heads, volutes and spirals. The pendant is actually a strap of black leather that is used to fasten this Tibetan knife to a belt.
An astounding, highly ornate and impressively decorated object. There is no significant damage.
Length: 48.2 cm (the knife in the sheath, in total). 19th century or earlier. (ME)

Provenance: Viennese private collection.
