Mixed lot (2 pieces), Tibet, Nepal: a ritual ‘dung kar’ shell trumpet and a tea bowl, both objects set with good-quality engraved silver.
1: A shell trumpet, called ‘dung kar’, blown by monks during many ceremonial rituals of Lamaistic Buddhism (Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan etc.). It consists of the white shell of a sea snail, or conch, cut off at its shorter end. This creates the blow hole. The short and long ends of the present conch shell trumpet are cloaked in high-quality, densely engraved silver. The engraving depicts meandering bands and volute-shaped leafy tendrils dotted with fortune symbols (fish, jewels etc.). A carefully crafted sacred object with visible old traces of usage. Length: c. 18 cm; width: 9 cm.
2: A round tea bowl made of burl wood, with a round base. The bowl, its edges and the underside with the base are coated in high-quality silver. Underneath there is a continuous band of eight magnificently engraved fortune symbols, and the base with engraved decoration is set with three polished light green turquoises. A very carefully crafted piece.
Height: 6 cm;
Diameter: 11 cm (above).
Both objects are without damage. Between the 19th and the early 20th centuries. (ME)
