India: a ‘Shiva lingam’ made of stone.
Shiva lingams are the sacred ritual symbols of the Hindu god Shiva. They are found as blanks in special rivers, and polished in designated workshops. They stand, vertically positioned, in the middle of every Shiva temple in India as a phallic symbol of the god. There, they are venerated by Hindu priests (Brahmins), who bring them sacrificial offerings, wash them, and decorate them with flowers. These lingams are prized (as the ‘male element’) for having different coloured natural, generally red, inclusions in the stone (as the ‘female element’). The present Shiva lingam is made of grey stone (the male, phallic symbol) with a near-round red inclusion to the top (the female symbol).
