Pakistan, Multan: a necklace with three large plate pendants made of silver with dark blue enamel decoration. - Tribal Art

The town of Multan in the Pakistani province of Punjab is the centre for the production of this typical kind of enamel jewellery: diverse finely crafted decorations consisting of dark blue enamel on silver. The three ‘Multan plates’ on the present necklace are also made of very high-quality silver with the characteristic covering of dark blue enamel on the front side. With delicately stylised floral representations in the centre of each, surrounded by edging comprising geometric patterns. The 19 teardrop-shaped pendants, with their dangling spherical bells, are also made of silver with stylised plants in blue enamel on their front side. The blank reverse of all three jewellery plates is covered with master craftsman’s marks.
Dimensions of the three enamel pendants: each c. 7.5 cm x c. 9.5 cm. First third of the 20th century.
The typical ‘Multan pendants’ were subsequently and recently strung onto black and coloured woollen fibres to form a necklace. (ME)
