A Yemeni amulet pendant made of silver worn by women on the chest as jewellery. The transversally positioned round, hollow amulet box has three eyelets at the top, with a carrying strap of woven silver wire threaded through, and pierced ends for the hook-and-eye closure. The amulet holder itself is decorated with small silver lozenges and rosettes which are soldered on. Originally, the inside contained amulets written on paper (Qur’anic surahs, ‘magic squares’ or similar) and the holder could be opened from one side (now sealed).
Eighteen silver chains (approx. 10 cm long) hang from rings on eight eyelets on the underside of the amulet cylinder. Underneath, these 18 chains support a transverse decorative plate made of silver which is decorated on the front side (like the amulet box) with silver wire, silver lozenges and rosettes. Again, 18 small hemispheric silver pendants hang from this decorative plate. The entire hanging apparatus from the amulet holder above (rings, chains, plate and pendants) does not fulfil a practical purpose: it is merely meant as attractive ornamentation.
