North Africa, Mali: a long necklace with smoothed beads made of red stone.
A necklace traditionally worn by women from various tribes across Mali and the surrounding northern savanna (Bambara, Dogon, etc.). With variously sized round smoothed beads, generally long in shape, made from red bauxite and threaded on a string made of light-coloured vegetal fibres. No significant damage. Length: c. 58 cm (the chain folded over). First half to mid-20th century. (ME)
