Lotto No. 199

Swazi (or Swasi), Kingdom of Swaziland in southern Africa: a typical Swazi neckrest.

Swazi (or Swasi), Kingdom of Swaziland in southern Africa: a typical Swazi neckrest. - Tribal Art

The Kingdom of Swaziland is a small landlocked state in southern Africa, surrounded by Mozambique and South Africa. Its people are called the Swazi. The present neckrest clearly comes from the Swazi, although their southern neighbours, the Zulu, also use similar styles. The Swazi neckrest is carved from a single piece of very hard, light-coloured wood. With two gently curved legs carved with deep, square, vertical grooves and dyed black (typical for the Swazi). The same is true of the square cone which protrudes from underneath the light-coloured surface that supports the neck. A piece with some scuffing of the colour to the edges and corners as a result of protracted use, and with a good, old, usage patina. No damage.
Height: 13 cm; width: 23 cm. First half to mid-20th century. (ME)

Provenance: South African private collection.
