Eastern Africa: an old necklace made from shells with a wide, central bead at the bottom and a wooden bead at the top.
Necklaces such as this one made from shell material can be found in various ethnic groups among the eastern African nomadic shepherds. They are a sign of prosperity.
The present necklace is made of finely smoothed and pierced discs of shell in various sizes, strung in a continuous line on a twisted cotton thread. The upper fastener is a long wooden bead, and in the middle below this there is a broad, thick bead made of shell material.
It is a piece of jewellery that has visibly been worn for a prolonged period of time. Minor old breakages to two discs. Slightly soiled. Otherwise no damage. There is an inventory number from a collection in white letters on the upper wooden bead. Length: 38 cm (folded over). First third of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: South African private collection.
Lit.: ‘A World of Necklaces’ by Anne Leurquin, ill. 122.
