Tanzania, tribe: Zigua: a beautiful mother and child figure.
A very attractive, old representation of a mother and child of the Zigua, from eastern Tanzania (on the coast of the Indian Ocean). Carved from very hard wood, with some pieces of fabric glued on, and originally dyed black.
The sitting mother, with a broad, round crested coiffure, holds her child as it stands on her knees. The eyes of both figures were set with small white glass beads (the child is missing one bead). The mother’s left arm and right leg, and the child’s right arm have broken due to age (visibly old fractures). Colour scuffing in places and a good, old patina.
Height: 23 cm; width: 6.5 cm; length: 14 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)
