Among the Lega, in eastern Congo, only the high-ranking members of the ‘Bwami’ society have the right to own objects made of ivory. With one exception: ivory spoons can be used by people of lower rank as part of ceremonies primarily associated with law and jurisdiction.
The present Lega ivory spoon has a very charmingly crafted small figure on its handle. With a large round head, dot-in-circle eyes, a long Lega nose and a small mouth. With a necklace consisting of tiny carved zig-zags. The arms and hands, as well as the legs and feet, are distinct from the body. The outer edge of the head and the stomach of the figure feature dot decoration, and the handle is retracted twice, and embellished with dot-in-circle motifs. It has been carved from one piece of ivory. All in all, this is a very attractive object with an old speckled light and dark reddish brown patina (the red colour probably comes from palm oil). The corners of all edges of the item are rounded and worn smooth as a result of protracted use. A short, old crack to the top of the head. Otherwise in excellent condition, no damage. There is an inventory number of a collection, in white lettering, on the back of the spoon. Length: 15.7 cm. Around 1900. (ME) ASA
