Lotto No. 162

Mongo, Konda, Dem. Rep. of Congo: an old shortsword with an attractively decorated blade, wooden hilt and wooden sheath.

Mongo, Konda, Dem. Rep. of Congo: an old shortsword with an attractively decorated blade, wooden hilt and wooden sheath. - Tribal Art

The Konda are part of the Mongo tribe and live in northwestern Congo. The Konda and some of their neighbours would formerly use shortswords such as this one. The present sword, including sheath, is visibly very old. The locally forged double-edged iron blade (27 cm long) has a middle ridge and features sharply rendered decoration from the hilt downwards on both sides consisting of forged tightly packed lines and lozenges (c. 15 cm long). The hilt and sheath are made of wood and have been dyed black. There are some very old breakages to the hilt and sheath, as well as some cracks. The entire object shows a convincing usage patina. Length: 43 cm (sword with sheath). Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian collection.

Lit.: ‘Beaute Fatale. Armes d’Afrique Centrale’ by Jean-Marie Duvosquel & Jacques Deraeve, ill. 388, 389, 390; ‘Afrikanische Waffen’ by Werner Fischer & Manfred Zirngibl, ill. 319.
