Mixed lot (4 items), Africa, Dem. Rep. of Congo, Niger, Burkina Faso: a shortsword from the Congo, an ankle bracelet of the Djerma from Niger, a bangle of the Mossi from Burkina Faso and another bangle of the Gurunsi.
1: A shortsword or ceremonial sword of the Tetela, from the upper course of the Congo River (south-east Congo). A piece with characteristically offset locally-forged iron blade, with three flat ridges on both sides. Also the long hilt shows the typical Tetela form, with two points at the sides and an intermediate round element. Coated in brass and spirally wrapped with iron bands. Length: 57 cm.
2: A heavy ankle bracelet of the Djerma, from the Niger. Cast of copper. The central part is twisted into a spiral. This is typical for these ‘Djerma bracelets’, as are also the large polyhedron ends. The outer surfaces of the bracelet are very beautifully decorated with geometric engravings and circular hallmarks. Heavy copper anklets, such as the present one, were not only worn by Djerma women, they also served as a form of currency (‘primitive money’).
Dimensions: 5.5 cm x 11 cm x 13.5 cm. Weight: 1.820 grams.
3: Two bangles from Burkina Faso. A thick bangle of the Mossi. Cast of highly cupriferous brass-bronze and extensively engraved and punched on the exterior with geometric motifs (lines, triangles, crosses, dots). The second bangle is cast of brass-bronze and its outer decoration is divided in three segments. With lines, a central braided ridge and with twelve spheres. Probably originating from the Gurunsi. Diameter: 9 cm x 10 cm and 9 cm x 11.5 cm (the outside).
All four objects in this mixed lot: early 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Viennese private collection.
