Lotto No. 143

Kuba (or Bakuba), Dem. Rep. of Congo: a tall standing drum in hourglass form, with two human figures as handles.

Kuba (or Bakuba), Dem. Rep. of Congo: a tall standing drum in hourglass form, with two human figures as handles. - Tribal Art

A single-headed standing drum of the Kuba in central Congo. Carved from a single piece of hard wood and dyed black. Formally executed in two pieces. Above is the hollow, round resonance body with the drumhead, below the standing foot in similar bellied form. Both parts are connected in the middle through a vertical, round strut with bulges.
On both sides of this strut stand two human figures, a woman and a man, curving towards the outside and serving as handles of this drum.
Both rounded, bellied parts feature carefully crafted, all-round relief bands as decoration. In the upper section there are two bands, and below a single band, with typical, geometric Kuba motifs (pointed bands, and a looping band). An age-related crack to the lower stand. Otherwise no damage. An interesting, rare drum type, with good patina.
Height: 74 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian private collection.

Lit.: 'Africa. Musica y Arte' by Elena Martinaz-Jacquet & David Serra, p. 108, ill. 54.
