Salampasu (or Basalampasu), Dem. Rep. of Congo: a very rare, large, female ‘face and body mask’ of the Salampasu.
Salampasu (or Basalampasu), Dem. Rep. of Congo: a very rare, large, female ‘face and body mask’ of the Salampasu.
An extremely rare ‘face and body mask’, combined into one piece, of the Salampasu from the south-west Congo. All carved from a single piece of hard wood and coloured black-brown.
The over-lifesize mask face shows the typical style of the Salampasu: the broad, bulging forehead, with slightly slanting, broad slit eyes below, two decorative scars on each temple, in front of the small ears, a short, broad nose above an almost rectangular, open mouth with two rows of teeth carved from the same piece. With a pointed chin – as with all Salampasu masks, made of wood (there also exist some which are made of plant fibres).
The female body with its breasts, made from a single piece, is simple, smooth, and unadorned.
An extremely rare object of African tribal art. With patina and slight colour scuffing to exposed areas, as well as with only one minor crack to the rear rim at the top. Otherwise, no damage.
Height: c. 88 cm; width: 26 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Private collection of Jos Christiaens, Bruges, Belgium.
Lit.: ‘Si vis pacem para artem. La création plastique chez les Salampasu’ by Julien Volper, ill. p. 109.
