Ngombe, Dem. Rep. of Congo: a stool for women, richly ornamented with decorative nails on its seat.
A stool, known as an ‘ebonga’, for the women of the Ngombe, from the north-west Congo. The rectangular stool is carved from a single piece of hard wood, and coloured brown. It stands on four heavy legs and the curved seat is ornamented with a fine pattern of brass decorative nails. Only very few nails missing (three or four). An old piece with a very good, shiny usage patina.
Height: 22 cm (middle); c. 28 cm (both sides); width: c. 29 cm; length: 36 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
